SNARF for: Revision of SEMI PV22-1011, Specification for Silicon Wafers for Use in Photovoltaic Solar Cells

Originating Global Technical Committee: Photovoltaic
Originating TC Chapter: China
Task Force (TF) in which work is to be carried out: PV Silicon Wafer Task Force
Note: If a new task force is needed, also submit a task force organization form (TFOF)

1. Rationale:
a. Describe the need or problem addressed by this activity.
(Indicate the customer, what benefits they will receive, and if possible, quantify the impact on the return on investment [ROI] if the Document is implemented.)
Quasi-monocrystalline silicon wafer, also called casting mono silicon wafer or mono-like silicon wafer, etc. is a new product used in the PV industry(See picture below), which did not specified in SEMI PV22-1011 and also no other standard has been created in this subject.
Quasi-monocrystalline silicon technique is to produce the monocrystalline material by using seed-assisted directional solidification process, inheriting the low cost of casting multi-crystalline silicon and high efficiency of Czochralski single crystalline. Due to the indispensability of the crucible in the cast process, quasi-monocrystalline silicon is currently the cast crystal with one large dominating grain in the center and small grains surrounded. This kind of grain size and grain size distribution makes quasi-monocrystalline wafer having its own characteristics, such as the percentage of the largest single grain of quasi-monocrystalline silicon wafer, which is a new concept for classifying the quality of this product and matching the subsequent cell processes.

Actually, PV silicon wafer Task Force of China PV standard committee has submit 5382B“Specification for quasi-monocrystalline silicon wafers used in Photovoltaic Solar Cells ” and 5724” Guide for specifying quasi-monocrystalline Silicon Wafers Used in Photovoltaic Solar Cells” in succession to define and character quais-monocrystalline silicon wafer, and all failed for conflicting with SEMI PV22-1011, Thus, in order to keep the body of standards conherent, we want to add quasi-monocrystalline silicon wafer in the SEMI PV22-1011.

b. Estimate effect on industry.
2: Major effect on an industry sector - identify the relevant sector
Sector or Company Information: PV cell and PV module manufacturer

c. Estimate technical difficulty of the activity.
III: Difficult - Limited expertise and resources exist and/or achieving consensus is difficult

2. Scope:
a: Describe the technical areas to be covered or addressed by this Document development activity. For Subordinate Standards, list common concepts or criteria that the Subordinate Standard inherits from the Primary Standard, as well as differences from the Primary Standard:
Add the definition of the terminology of quasi-mono silicon wafer and the percentage of the largest grains, and provide a ways of classification of quasi-mono silicon wafer in order to match the subsequent cell process.

b: Expected result of activity
Major revision to an existing Standard or Safety Guideline

For a new Subordinate Standard, identify the Primary Standard here:

5. Safety Considerations:
The resulting document is expected:
NOT to be a Safety Guideline

NOTE FOR "to be a Safety Guideline": When all safety-related information is removed from the Document, the Document is NOT technically sound and complete - Refer to Section 15.1 of the Regulations for special procedures to be followed.

NOTE FOR "NOT to be a Safety Guideline": When all safety-related information is removed from the Document, the Document is still technically sound and complete.

6. Intellectual Property Considerations:
Note: Both a: and b: below should be checked for Revision of existing Standard(s) and Safety Guideline(s).

a. For a new Standard or Safety Guideline and for any part to be modified or added in a Revision of published Standards and Safety Guidelines:
the use of patented technology is NOT required.

If "patented technology is intended to be included in the proposed Standard(s) or Safety Guideline(s) " is selected above, then also check one:
