SEMI New Activity Report Form (SNARF)

Activity Number: 5054
SNARF for: Test Method for Perceptual Motion Blur in LCD

Originating Global Technical Committee: Flat Panel Display (FPD) - Metrology
Originating Technical Committee Region: Korea
Task Force in which work is to be carried out: Perceptual Motion Blur

1. Rationale: Moving edge blur is an important issue on current display technology. Various attempts have been made to characterize and measure the moving edge blur. The Moving Picture Response Time (MPRT) method which measure the time of the blurred edge in gray-to-gray transitions have been widely used for Liquid Crystal Display.
However, some discrepancies have been found between the measured MPRT and moving edge blur quality as perceived by the human visual system. These findings show that the simple MPRT is not sufficient as an objective measure of motion blur.
Therefore, this standard will describe a moving edge blur measurement method which provides an accurate estimate of perceptual moving edge blur

Rate the Estimated Effect on the Industry
1: Major effect on entire industry or on multiple important industry sectors

Rate the Estimated Technical Difficulty of the Activity
II: Some Difficulty - Disagreements on known requirements exist but developing consensus is possible
