SEMI International Standards
SEMI New Activity Report Form (SNARF)

Activity Number: 5337
SNARF for: New Standard: Test Method for Optical Characteristics of Transparent Display

Originating Global Technical Committee: Flat Panel Display (FPD) - Metrology
Originating Technical Committee Region: Korea
Task Force in which work is to be carried out: Transparent Display

1. Rationale: The new type of display is introducing in the display industry. One of the promising technologies is transparent displays. Currently one of the major panel maker announced mass production for 22 inches transparent display and OLED transparent display also has been demonstrated in major exhibitions for 2 years. But there are no methods to characterize the transparent displays for optical performance. So, this is necessary to make standard for transparent display. This document will take cover transparent LCD and OLED display measurement methods since those two displays have a different technologies to achieve transparent functions, but final optical performance are the same in transparent performances.
Rate the Estimated Effect on the Industry
2: Major effect on an industry sector - identify the relevant sector

Rate the Estimated Technical Difficulty of the Activity
II: Some Difficulty - Disagreements on known requirements exist but developing consensus is possible

2. Scope:
a: Define the areas to be covered or addressed by this activity or document:
This document defines optical measurement conditions, measurement methods, and analysis methods for transparent displays such as LCD and OLED.

b: Expected result of activity
New Standard

3. Projected Timetable for Completion:
a: General Milestones
a. Activity Start: 10/12/2011b. 1st Draft by: 06/30/2014
c. Preballot by: d. Technical Ballot by: 06/30/2014
e. Committee Approval By:06/30/2015

Safety Considerations:
The resulting document is expected NOT to be a Safety Guideline

Intellectual Property Considerations:
a. In complying with the standard or safety guideline to be developed, the use of patented technology or a copyrighted item(s) is NOT required
b. The body of the standard and any appendices or related information sections will NOT include copyrighted material

Comments, Special Circumstances: The activity was originally handled by Optical characteristic task force but it moved to Transparent Display task force because originated task force was disbanded. Revised SNARF was approved at the committee meeting on July 25, 2013

Approval: Activity approved by Committee/GCS on July 25, 2013
