1. Charter: (State the objective of the proposed TF.)
Develop standards to verify the authenticity of software (e.g., design automation) license servers in order to prevent unauthorized cloning of said servers. The objective is to assure software customers do not use more instances of the software than entitled to (licensed).

2. Scope: (Define the specific activities that the TF will conduct.)
The Server Certification Protocol standard defines the parameters collected and used to generate a unique identifier (“fingerprint”) for each license server at a software customer. That unique identifier will be used to assure only authorized license servers are activated by the licensor to permit the use of the allowed number of software licenses on the customer’s site.

The intent is to prevent the unauthorized cloning of license servers, thus preventing unauthorized use of licensed software. While this is initially targeted at Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software, the standard does not preclude applications for other licensed software applications.

Major electronic design automation customers have been and will be consulted to assure needs for high availability of software licenses are not adversely affected.
